⚔ fantasy

Generations back, a school of spellcasters learned to tap an unstable current running through the space between worlds. Their craft was potent but temperamental, and it did not stay contained to the spirit side of things for long — portals tore open on their own, unnatural predators wandered loose, and the current itself began leaking into ordinary reality. Wayhaven, then a thriving crossroads city, took the worst of it: a horde of clawed, winged horrors once poured out of a rift at its very heart, and though the city held, the ruler of that age and his circle of loyalist casters decided the current — later dubbed the Kayos — needed sealing away for good. The renegade spellcasters who had discovered it disagreed and kept using it, and the loyalists eventually vanished from history still hunting a way to shut it out.

Without anyone reining it in, the Kayos only grew. Fissures kept opening across the land, monstrous things claimed whole districts, and one catastrophic surge wiped Niroth off the map — a once-proud realm to the north — leaving behind the frozen wastes that still border Wayhaven today.

Matters came to a head generations later in the conflict people now remember as the Mage Wars, when rival spellcasters turned on one another to monopolize the wild current for themselves. One of them, a traitor named Erthorpion, seized the royal keep by treachery and turned it into a fortress against his own kind, hurling waves of raw Kayos at the city outside. Wayhaven's ruler perished alongside nearly the whole city in that clash, and Erthorpion's retaliatory strike erased an entire coastal peninsula before an alliance of loyal casters and displaced armies finally brought him down — he is said to have jumped from the keep's tower into the bay below rather than be taken.

What survived the fighting was a husk of what came before. Wayhaven rose again as capital only because there was nowhere else left, but it absorbed far more refugees than its shattered economy could support, while the emptied northern holds fell to bandits and displaced raiders. The old ruling line died with no heir, and its place was taken by a tangle of clerks and tax farmers rather than any crown.

That's roughly where things stand now — petty lordlings squabble over what's left, the bureaucracy squeezes what little commerce survives, and yet ships are starting to call at the docks again. Between the old scars and the fresh unrest, there's no shortage of work for anyone willing to go looking for it.
