This reality is only one strand within a much larger web of worlds, an ever-branching lattice that most inhabitants never notice. People who live on any single strand rarely suspect there's anything beyond it. A rare few brush against the truth through forbidden rituals or things summoned from elsewhere. Fewer still have ever glimpsed the whole pattern.
Long before living memory, a people called the Viators arrived here in one single crossing from wherever they'd fled. Nobody recorded why, and the true reason is long lost to legend and hearsay. What's certain is that their arrival reshaped everything and set every race here on a different course than it would otherwise have taken. What little existed before them is barely worth mentioning โ this realm effectively begins with their crossing. All that's left of them now is the city they founded, Patria Nova, the seed of the civilization that still thrives there.
Patria Nova today is nothing like a typical hometown. Generations after the Viators themselves faded from the scene, its streets hold every language, bloodline, and belief you could name, none of them dominant โ and that mixture is exactly what keeps the city standing.
Buried in Patria Nova sits the true source of this realm's name: a device known as the Foris, built or conjured (accounts disagree) to seize an ordinary object and warp it into a fixed passage between one strand of reality and another. Anything transformed this way becomes an apertio, permanently altered and never quite like any other, and stepping through one lets a traveler cross into, and later back out of, a different strand entirely.
The trouble is that the Viators' bloodline has all but died out, and with it the know-how to keep the Foris in check. Nobody can predict where its openings will land anymore; some connections hold steady while others drift and wander on their own, and rumor has it the device has begun spinning up entirely new strands out of nothing more than what people nearby are thinking about. There's no way to switch it off, which is exactly why this realm plays by no fixed rules โ sacred cows, continuity, and straight faces are all optional here, and the comedy is very much intentional.
Signature areas
3Scapes runs 736 areas across its three realms, and the chaos realm branches into far more strands than any one list could cover. The picks below are a curated sample โ built for 3Scapes and stitched together nowhere else.
- Chaos Haberdashery โ the Mad Milliner's shop of enchanted fashion, where mannequins watch and some of the outfits have opinions of their own about who's wearing them.
- Kitty Mafia โ a mafia-run building carried in on the back of a ladybug that's finally settled onto some gooey asphalt; suggested level 150, and a few residents need the right item to reach.
- Campers Cove โ a rustic camping retreat built on the old Rockland family farmstead, where campers have started vanishing and an unnerving quiet has settled over the trees.
- Hunger Games โ the Capitol never actually stopped; head into Chaos toward the Arena, where a Silver Parachute drifts as a sign survival's still possible.
- Slade City โ a once-peaceful town overrun by the Rovers, a mercenary band spreading drunken disorder; pick a side and get pulled into an interactive romp built for level 60 and up.
- Liquor Store โ a liquor mega-store abandoned out in the wastelands until its runaway neon sign led scavengers back to shelves guarded by toppled cardboard heroes, suited to level 70 and up.
- Krispy Krematorium โ a doughnut shop in Chaos whose wares bite back; the case is stocked with strictly high-end prey, so bring backup, not just an appetite.
- Smurfland 1โ4 โ four expansions deep into a cartoon village, complete with an increasingly nasty villain and a running feud with Peewit, recommended for level 20 and up.
- Dog Pound โ a shelter holding rather more than ordinary strays.
- Thorne's Contraption โ a garage inventor near Chicago needs test subjects willing to be scattered into particles and hurled back through history to retrieve three lost artifacts; unpaid, but loot's yours to keep.
- The Interstellar Phenomenon โ a spiral galaxy arm, somehow within walking distance.
- Brimleyland โ a tribute to Wilford Brimley and his legendary mustache, tucked into Chaos and meant for players around level 75.
